"Sometimes the best photos come from the moments that go completely off plan — when love shines brightest in the middle of the storm."

An Unforgettable Engagement Adventure, Karle and Mike at Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain

Sometimes, the most meaningful sessions are the ones that refuse to go as planned. Karle and Mike’s engagement session at Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain turned into exactly that kind of story, one filled with unpredictability, quick decisions, and moments that felt even more special because they were hard won.

We arrived at Carvers Gap with the kind of anticipation that always comes with photographing in such an iconic location. Normally, the views stretch endlessly, rolling layers of mountains fading into the horizon. But that day, the mountain had other plans. The mist was so thick that we could barely see three feet in front of us. Everything was swallowed in white, quiet and disorienting, like standing inside a cloud.

At first, it was discouraging. We had come all this way and could not even use the location we had planned for. But instead of calling it, we pivoted. We made the decision to drive down the mountain a little, hoping to find clearer pockets along the way. What we found instead were small pull offs and edges of the mountain that gave us just enough space and just enough visibility to start creating.

Those unexpected spots turned out to be perfect in their own way. The fog softened everything, the greens felt deeper, and the light wrapped around Karle and Mike in a way that felt almost cinematic. There was a quiet intimacy to it all. They leaned into the experience fully, laughing through the uncertainty and trusting the process, which made every image feel genuine and alive.

By the time we moved into the second outfit, everything felt like it was falling into place. Then came another twist. Mike realized his car keys were missing. Without hesitation, he took off down the road, running what felt like two blocks to track them down. It was one of those moments you cannot plan for, slightly chaotic but somehow still part of the story. Thankfully, he found them and came back, a little out of breath but successful.

Almost as soon as he returned, the sky began to shift again. The light dropped, the air changed, and within minutes a thunderstorm started pushing its way toward us. The wind picked up quickly, tearing through the trees and whipping everything around us. You could feel the urgency in the air as the first drops of rain began to fall.

We did not have much time, but we used every second of it. With the storm rolling in and the wind building, we quickly captured what would become some of the most striking images of the entire session. Karle’s hair moved wildly in the wind, Mike pulled her in close, and together they stood steady against everything happening around them. There was something powerful about it, something real. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like a moment unfolding exactly as it was meant to.

By the time the rain fully arrived, we were packing up, soaked and laughing at everything the day had thrown at us. We never got those wide open views at Carvers Gap, the ones people usually come for. But what we got instead felt far more personal.

This session was a reminder that not everything needs to go right to turn out beautifully. Sometimes the fog, the detours, the missing keys, and the incoming storm create something even better than the original plan. Karle and Mike embraced every part of it, and because of that, their photos tell a story that is entirely their own.
